Duvel and The Importance of Glassware

posted Thursday, Jan 26, 2017  |  06:41PM

In 1923, the production of Duvel began with just a few crates. Today, Duvel is enjoyed all around the world, in more than 60 countries, by countless beer lovers. The beer is still brewed with profound respect for the original recipe and the time it needs to mature. In the late 1960s, the Duvel glass became the first tulip shaped beer glass. The rounded shape allows Duvel’s exquisite flavor and aroma to be fully experienced by the consumer.

The Duvel glass itself is quite large and sports the traditional tulip design to help preserve the head and lacing; it also provides room for drinkers to dip their nose in and fully take in the brew’s aroma. The “D” etched on the inside the base enhances lacing and keeps the CO2 in check. The lip curving outwards-a trademark of all tulip glasses-helps deliver the beer directly onto the front of the tongue, where your sweet taste buds are.

If you want 100% enjoyment from your Duvel, you would do best to follow these rules:

1. Serve your Duvel in the proper glass, a Duvel tasting glass of course.
2. Use a dry, clean glass at room temperature. Rinse first with a little pure water.
3. Hold the glass at an angle and pour from a gradually increasing distance.
4. Bring the glass slowly upright.
5. Leave approximately 1 cm of beer (the yeast) in the bottle. The yeast is very healthy and full of vitamins, but do increase the beer’s bitterness.

Always store your beer upright in a cool, dark place.
This way, the bitter yeast will not spread in the bottle and you can leave them in the bottle if you wish while serving.
It is possible to keep Duvel for 3 years in optimum circumstances (a cool, dark space); the added yeast and sugars keep the yeast alive and protect it from aging.

Duvel | RateBeer 98
Duvel is a natural beer with a subtle bitterness, a refined flavor and a distinctive hop character. The unique brewing process, which takes about 90 days, guarantees a pure character, delicate effervescence and a pleasant sweet taste of alcohol.
Apart from pure spring water, which is the main ingredient of beer, barley is the most important raw material. Barley must germinate for five days in the malt house, after which malt remains. The color of the malt and as a consequence also of the beer is determined by the temperature. Duvel obtains its typical bitterness by adding various varieties of aromatic Slovenian and Czech hops. We use only exclusive hops that are renowned for their constant, outstanding quality. 8.5% ABV

Bosteels Kwak | RateBeer 92
The unique Kwak glass was created in the 18th century by Pauwel Kwak, brewer and the owner of the De Hoorn inn (near Brussels). Mail coaches stopped there every day, but at that time, coachmen were not allowed to leave their coach and horses. As a result, the inventive innkeeper had a special Kwak glass blown that could be hung on the coach. In this way, the coachman had his Kwak beer safely at hand. Not just for novelty, the long neck and round base makes a nice rich, frothy head.

Full-bodied Belgian Specialty Ale. Amber in color with beautiful foam and slightly sweet, seductive malt character. Rich, satisfying Belgian experience.

Weihenstephaner Hefe | RateBeer 99
The traditional Weizen glass, with thin walls and length, showcase the beer’s color and allows for much headspace to contain the fluffy head associated with the style. This glass is specifically produced to take on volume and head, while locking in the banana-like and phenol aromas associated with the style.

Weihenstephaner‘s golden-yellow wheat beer, with its fine-poured white foam, smells of cloves and impresses consumers with its refreshing banana flavor. It is full bodied and with a smooth yeast taste. To be enjoyed at any time, goes excellently with fish and seafood, with spicy cheese and especially with the traditional Bavarian veal sausage. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill. 5.4% ABV

Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale
Kentucky Ale recommends the 10 oz. snifter glass for Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale. There are two main reasons for this. First, the stem allows the consumer to preserve the serving temperature, by not warming the beer with their hands. And second, the shape of the glass, focuses the aroma of the vanilla and oak toward the top of the glass and enhances head retention.

Pleasantly smooth and robust, Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale is a unique sipping beer with the distinctive nose of a well-crafted bourbon. Subtle, yet familiar flavors of vanilla and oak are imparted to this special ale as it rests in the charred barrels. 8.2% ABV
